Next-Generation Carrier Ethernet

The Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) set the groundwork for Carrier Ethernet by defining five attributes to distinguish it from traditional LAN Ethernet. These include: standardized services, scalability, reliability, quality of service (QoS) and service management. These attributes bring carrier-class capabilities to traditional LAN Ethernet, adapting it for cost-effective use as a WAN and MAN technology.

While Carrier networks consist of many transport technologies, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future, the next-generation of Carrier Ethernet equipment will need to enable the true transition from TDM to packet-based networks in a way that allows carriers to maintain and upgrade service levels while controlling operating costs. What will make this possible? IC solutions that are specifically designed to support Carrier Ethernet will be essential to the evolution to next-generation networks.
