Vitesse PHY Solutions Advance Synchronous Ethernet
10GE and 1GE PHY ICs Offer Synchronous Timing Support for Next-Generation Packet Networks
LAS VEGAS - Interop 2007 - May 22, 2007 - Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (VTSS.PK) today announced the availability of 10GE and 1GE PHY solutions that support reliable, synchronous data transfer over IP packet-based networks.
The Synchronous Ethernet PHYs enable system vendors to develop network equipment that can deliver voice, video, and data services over a single, converged Ethernet link by implementing synchronization in accordance with ITU-T Recommendation G.8261/Y.1361. The VSC8486 10GE LAN/WAN transceiver and the VSC8211 single 10/100/1000 BASE-T PHYs both support this developing standard, accelerating the adoption of Ethernet deep into the traditional Wide Area Network (WAN).
"The Vitesse VSC8486 provides us with an industry-leading solution for Synchronous Ethernet applications and is currently undergoing qualification in our products," said Mr. Guojiayuan, the director of Huawei's data department in the Optical transmission division. "Vitesse is an important supplier in our plans to release new products into this emerging space."
Solutions for 10GE and 1GE Synchronous Ethernet
The new VSC8486 10GE WAN/LAN solution is a low power SerDes with XFI, XGMII, and XAUI interfaces. It uses the Ethernet physical layer to provide reference timing signal distribution over packet networks. This reference timing signal, with proper phase stability and frequency accuracy characteristics, allows operators to migrate to a next-generation packet architecture, supporting time-sensitive applications that include cellular, circuit emulation services, streaming video, and VoIP.
This critical clock feature for Synchronous Ethernet applications is also available on various Vitesse copper 1GE PHYs. For example, the VSC8211 single-port 10/100/1000BASE-T and 1000BASE-X PHY provides an IEEE 802.3 jitter-compliant 125 MHz recovered clock output on a dedicated pin.
"Vitesse's support for reference timing distribution at the Ethernet physical layer provides a synchronization method that is independent of traffic congestion for carrier systems requiring high levels of service reliability," said Brian Jaroszewski, senior product line manager for Ethernet Copper PHYs, at Vitesse. "The solutions leverage Vitesse's thorough understanding of both the Telecom market and Ethernet technology and highlight our commitment to the telecom PHY market."
Availability
The 10GE and 1GE devices from Vitesse are available today and support synchronization as defined in ITU-T G.8261/Y.1361. The 10GE LAN/WAN PHY (VSC8486) is sampling and the copper 1GE PHY (VSC8211) is in full production. These devices will be featured in live demonstrations at Interop 2007 in Las Vegas, May 22-24, 2007.
